Feldenkrais® Method 1:1Functional Integration® (FI)

REFINING THE SELF, THROUGH AWARENESS

Feldenkrais® private sessions are known as Functional Integration® (FI®) lessons. In Functional Integration, the teacher guides an individual student in movement lessons using gentle, non-invasive touch as the primary means of communication. Using the core principles of Feldenkrais, I will work with you step by step to help you organize your movement and unlock ease filled movement potential.

The Feldenkrais teacher’s touch reflects to the student how they currently organize their body and actions. They suggest, through gentle touch and movement, expanded possibilities for new movement patterns which are more comfortable, efficient, and useful. Functional Integration lessons are flexible in their approach, determined by the student’s needs. The student may lie comfortably on a table designed specifically for the work, or do some of the lesson sitting or standing. The student learns how to reorganize their actions in new and more effective ways through the experience of comfort, enjoyment, and ease of movement. Your practice is personalized to fit your needs in an open, safe space. The intention is never to “fix” or “correct" the student, but instead to create a context for learning. I will move you slowly, in an easy range, feeling how movement passes through you and helping take over extra work you are doing.

“The aim of the Feldenkrais Method is a person who is organized to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how movement works.”

LESS IS MORE

You will feel how you are connected, through movement, with a greater sense of ease in how your skeleton supports you. You may become aware of where or how you are holding tension and then find yourself letting go. You will have a fresh, newly discovered experience of yourself. I think one HUGE thing we get from this work is a felt sense of the interconnectedness, the way we are one system.  Not a collection of parts.

FAQ

Should I start with a group session or a 1:1 ?
Functional Integration 1:1 sessions are designed for the individual and their unique needs and concerns. If you desire an accelerated learning process or a private learning environment, this may be the more appropriate setting for you. Awareness Through Movement group classes are a lower cost, more informal way to experience the method. Some people only attend the classes or do both 1:1 with the added support of weekly classes.

How many lessons do I need to commit to? How soon will I feel improvement?
All of this depends on how much you would like to learn. This process is slow and subtle, and it might take you a few hours with me to integrate the language and this way of learning. I suggest taking four Functional Integration® sessions to get a feel for how the method works, and at least six Awareness Through Movement® classes. Within this time frame, you will be able to gather information about yourself and form a more clear understanding of your personal goals. Often, this means you have already begun to feel better! The process continues to unfold as you go along and the possibilities are somewhat limitless.

Do I need prior Feldenkrais Experience?
You do not need any prior experience to Feldenkrais before we begin our work together. However, it can be beneficial to read a bit about the method and see if it appeals to your way of learning. You can read a little more about the method here or visit the FAQ page for more resources. Another great way is to sit into a public livestream class and try it out. Contact me for access to try a class for the first time.

How is this different than massage or chiropractic?
In Feldenkrais the student learns how to reorganize their actions in new and more effective ways through the experience of comfort, enjoyment, and ease in movement. I will be guiding you through movement, via touch. The touch is often much lighter than massage, and the movements are much less aggressive than traditional chiropractic. The intention is never to “fix” or “correct" the student, but instead to create a context for learning. Unlike chiropractic or massage, where the student is passive, in Feldenkrais, the student stays active in the learning process. I will move you slowly, in an easy range, feeling how movement passes through you and helping take over extra work you are doing. One aim is to help you become more aware of where or how you are holding tension so you can learn new more efficient ways of moving.

What do I need to participate in a group class?
Once you sign up for class, you will have access to the livestream class on my studio platform, where all the classes and class recordings are housed. You can sign up to receive email reminders with the zoom links and information on how to join the livestream class. Please have a space to lie down (preferably a firm surface, with a thin blanket). Wear loose fitting clothing that will allow freedom of movement. Feel free to have your camera on or off.
