Feldenkrais and Yoga Courses

Every course on this page blends a traditional yoga asana practice with the Feldenkrais Method. Each one was recorded from a live class taught on Zoom, so you can take it whenever suits you, at whatever pace you want, from wherever you are.

If you would rather join in real time, Sarah teaches this format live every Monday morning. Everything on this page is recorded and self-paced.

It is meditation and movement combined.

How are these somatic yoga classes different from a regular yoga class?

Sarah Baumert

Somatic yoga is a broad term for yoga that puts what you sense ahead of what the pose looks like from the outside. In these classes, that comes specifically from the Feldenkrais Method, which Sarah trained in and has taught for years alongside her yoga practice.

These classes typically begin with an exploratory floor sequence to engage the brain-body connection, awareness of breath, and activation of specific areas of the body that will be targeted during yoga poses. The last half of class is typically slightly more of a traditional yoga practice, in which students have the opportunity to experience the yoga asanas from a new perspective and with the information gathered from the first part of class.

Each class infuses a more traditional yoga asana practice with the Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement method..

These classes are an interdisciplinary excursion of yoga, Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement, joint specific training, self-massage, breathing exercises, movement puzzles, and a compassionate mindset to help you feel a greater sense of ease and comfort in yourself.

In many yoga traditions, the emphasis is on perfecting shapes and isolating movement at specific joints. Here, attention is on treating your body as a connected system. Allow your body to be your guide. All levels are welcome, and no previous experience with yoga or the Feldenkrais Method is needed

Understanding the Difference: Yoga, Feldenkrais, and Sarah’s Blended Approach

Understanding the Difference: Yoga, Feldenkrais, and Sarah’s Blended Approach

While both traditional Yoga and the Feldenkrais Method® cultivate a deeper connection to your body, they approach movement from slightly different philosophies. Traditional Yoga Asana focuses primarily on posture, alignment, strength, and flexibility. In a standard yoga class, it’s more common for the instructor to visually demonstrate established shapes. The student holds postures while the teacher guides you through breathwork and alignment cues.

By contrast, a classic Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement class is entirely non-visual. The teacher rarely demonstrates the movements; instead, the entire class is verbally guided. Students explore subtle, gentle micro-movements and novel variations at their own pace, focusing on neuromuscular re-education, releasing habitual effort, and discovering more efficient movement pathways through direct internal experience.

Our Yoga + Feldenkrais Blended Class bridges these two worlds to create a truly unique movement experience. Rather than choosing between the structured flow of yoga or the purely subtle exploration of Feldenkrais, these classes infuse traditional yoga asanas with the intelligent curiosity of Awareness Through Movement. Through a dynamic mix of clear visual demonstration and rich verbal guidance, we expand beyond standard poses to create an interdisciplinary excursion—incorporating movement puzzles, joint-specific conditioning, self-massage, and targeted breathing exercises. Rather than forcing your body into rigid yoga postures, you learn to use Feldenkrais principles to unravel tension, solve movement challenges, and tailor every pose to your unique anatomy. Rooted in a compassionate mindset, this approach helps you move past physical striving so you can walk away feeling a genuine sense of ease, comfort, and freedom in yourself.
