Feldenkrais Course for Going Up and Down Stairs

A 5 lesson Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement Series with Sarah Baumert

This is Part 3 of a three-part series exploring how Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® applies to daily life. Part 1 covers reaching overhead, reaching down to the floor, and spinal rotation movements, and Part 2 focuses on actions in the garden like squatting, kneeling, and reaching.

For these 5 lessons, we are bringing our attention to a functional action most of us face every single day: walking up and down the stairs. Just like our previous series Making it Relevant series, we are using this specific, everyday challenge as a playground for your nervous system. Climbing stairs requires a brilliant symphony of balance, strength, and spatial awareness. Over the next five lessons, we will deconstruct this complex action into bite-sized, accessible movements, helping you discover a sense of lightness and predictability on every step.

Whether stairs are currently a struggle for you or you simply want to make them feel effortless, this series will completely shift how you transition between levels.

What We Will Explore:

  • Finding Your True Alignment (On the Floor): Before we even head to a staircase, we will use a preparation lesson on the floor. The solid ground provides a strict, incredibly clear plane of feedback to help you align your knee precisely over your foot. From there, we will map out the exact location of the hip joint, integrating its vertical alignment directly over the knee so your bones can efficiently bear your weight.

  • The Physics of the Ascent: We will start quite literally at the bottom of the stairs and progress carefully just a few steps up. The secret to an easy ascent isn't just about the leg lifting up—it’s about the timing of support from the back leg. By coordinating the back leg, the pelvis, and the spine, you will find a significant refinement of attention that transforms a heavy climb into an aesthetically smooth, continuous rise.

  • Mastering the Descent (The Balance Secret): Lowering yourself down a step requires just as much muscular work as lifting yourself up, but it feels entirely different. Biomechanically, your thigh muscles must lengthen while contracting (eccentric contraction) rather than shortening. This unique action is intimately tied to your balance. Don't we want our descent to be just as smooth and confident as our ascent? We will explore how to decelerate with grace, taking the shock out of your joints.

The Bigger Picture: One Action, Infinite Benefits

Even if your home doesn't have stairs, the habits we refine over these five weeks ripple out into all aspects of your life. The precise coordination of the ankle, knee, and hip under weight is the exact same mechanics you use to:

  • Step off a curb safely.

  • Hike or walk on uneven trails and sloped ground.

  • Single-leg balance while putting on clothes or navigating tight spaces.

  • Move with a lighter, more shock-absorbent stride during daily walking.

The Feldenkrais Method operates on the understanding that how we move is how we live. It is a process of somatic education that uses the clarity of our coordination as a gateway to improving the overall quality of our behavior. Because coordination precedes and supports every aspect of our functioning, Awareness Through Movement® offers a unique bridge to the moments that matter most in your daily life.

This series is an invitation to move beyond the abstract and apply our awareness directly to the mechanics of daily living, ensuring that your coordination, balance, and strength become dependable resources in your moment-to-moment experience.

”I really don’t know what I would do without our yoga and Feldenkrais community that you have nurtured. Without this regular practice and participation, it is easy for me to be pulled in too many directions, becoming anxious and worried, distraught and distracted. Experiencing my body through your lessons is like “touching base” with the safe boundary that contains who I am. I feel more centered and certain of both my limitations and my strengths. I am learning to do less and not take on too much; to say “no” when I do not have the capacity for an unexpected request; to say “yes” everyday to experiences and activities that evoke joy in my body (like walking outside) and peace of mind.” - Helen

I am so grateful that you continue to provide these life giving, body strengthening and soul nurturing classes. They are like an inner meditation for every cell in my body! - Rosie

After I switched to the ‘regular’ yoga class, I realized I missed how I felt during and after Feldenkrais. I experience an ease of being, a soft wholesomeness, in Feldenkrais. I meditate most mornings, and I sometimes find that same stillness after Feldenkrais. Also, ease of movement: I am always struck at how gracefully I can move a limb compared to how the limb starts out. -Elizabeth

What I love so much about your classes: when the unexpected happens, like a jigsaw puzzle falling into place. Keep surprising me! - Jane

I find your classes to be exceptionally supportive and illuminating, and I’ve so benefitted from the learning and the unlearning I’ve experienced. Drop by drop, this practice and what I’ve received from your teaching have radically changed how I am in my body and in my life. These online Feldenkrais courses have become some of my favorite practices ever, and I’m excited every time you propose a new series. - Betsy
